Questions
Which key-value store is cheapest?
It depends on the shape of the workload, which is why the calculator exists. A small app often fits a free tier (Turso, Supabase, Upstash or Cloudflare KV). Per-request meters get expensive for a busy cache: 500 million reads a month costs $245 in Cloudflare KV read charges alone, while Upstash charges $100 on its 5 GB fixed plan. For large datasets, storage price decides it, and ElastiCache Serverless, which bills memory by the hour, is by far the most expensive place to keep cold data.
How much does DynamoDB cost per month?
On-demand in US East costs $0.125 per million read request units, $0.625 per million write request units and $0.25 per GB-month after 25 GB of free storage. Ten million eventually consistent reads and one million writes of 1 KB items come to $1.25 a month.
Is Cloudflare Workers KV cheaper than DynamoDB?
For reads up to 10 million a month, the $5 Workers Paid plan already covers them. Writes are the difference: Cloudflare charges $5.00 per million writes after the first million, against $0.625 per million write units on DynamoDB, so write-heavy workloads cost several times more on KV.
Why is ElastiCache Serverless so expensive for small data?
It bills stored data per GB-hour. One gigabyte held all month is 730 GB-hours, which is $61.32 on the Valkey engine before a single request, and about $91 on the Redis OSS engine.
What does the calculator leave out?
Data transfer out of AWS, Cloudflare Worker request charges beyond 10 million, backups, extra regions, support plans and taxes. Each provider row lists what it assumes under How this adds up.
